"Doug Meyers is the first Wyoming County Resident to receive the 2009 Good Samaritan Heroes Award . Doug was nominated by his neighbor Shirley Bird, whom he rescued when her home caught fire late one night. - Doug and his wife were awakened by his neighbors smoke alarm late one evening, they looked out and saw their neighbors home on fire, while his wife called 911 for help he ran into the night wearing only what he had on, he could not go through the front of the home as flames burst out from the door and front windows. Doug used the back door to enter -the smoke was thick and he had to stay low. Doug called to his neighbor, she answered from the second floor of her home- he was able to reach her and bring himself and his neighbor Shirley out to safety. To hear Doug's account of the incident and what he did to save another's life will leave a lasting impression on yours."
